Katherine Darcangelis is the founder/creator of What The Rec. A resource website aimed to inspire, educate, and advocate for those who work in geriatric healthcare and beyond within the context of leisure and recreation.
She is currently the Volunteer Coordinator for a 5-county wide Hospice organization on the Main Line in Pennsylvania. She is also an adjunct Professor for Temple Univerity, teaching for the Human Development, and Education Departments. She is a board-certified Activities Professional through the NAAPCC and is the Pennsylvania State Representative for the organization.
She holds a Master’s degree in Nonprofit Management, to better understand how to create effective programming, and volunteer management strategies. She hopes to get a second Master’s in gerontology, to be a true gerontologist, and push advocacy forward.
Along with this, she also holds a strong background in Therapeutic Recreation and Human Development; with an emphasis on gerontology. She is a selected member of Rho Phi Lambda; the Parks Recreation & Leisure National Honor Society and Psi Chi the American Psychological Association National Honor Society for her high marks and dedication to the fields of recreation and psychology.
She has a passion for the geriatric field, and a strong desire to propel the recreation/activity profession(s) forward and be at the forefront of geriatric care services. She hopes to utilize her knowledge and skillset to bridge the gap between RT & Activities, and also showcase the need for recreation in End of Life Care, grief support, and aged care in general.
Her work has been published on ATRA as well as other recreation platforms, and her What The Rec Facebook community is growing daily.
With her knowledge, experience, and skillset, she aims to provide you will a resource that empowers you to build the best programs, departments, and nonprofit agencies catered to your clients.
A recreation professional should have a strong understanding of their own leisure interests & needs. Kate loves reading for leisure, crafting, blogging, and exploring museums.
